The end of the year always provides a moment for reflection, with one of those reflections being that I have failed to blog for a large part of the year….
2023 in review
Three projects dominated activity in the latter part of 2023:
The MyWorld programme continued to gather momentum over 2023 as project investments finally began to deliver results. Work with major industry partners like Nvidia, Bauer Media and Nation Media added a significant weight to R&D and the imminent opening of the Coal Shed facility will provide both a high-quality research facility and visible base for the project.
Work to explore the potential of a Bristol / Cardiff Creative Supercluster concept delivered positive and sometimes surprising results, including a growth rate well in advance of the UK creative industries and wider economy. Establishing a clear data position and identifying a potentially productive direction of travel for future policy has gathered broad interest, regionally and nationally.
And a return to an advisory role with the Department for Business & Trade, specialising in strategic support for creative industries inward investment, has meant a welcome expansion of scope and international reach. Exploring the scale of impact of AI and optimism around the metaverse in Helsinki at Slush was a reminder of the importance of the context of an international view.
In parallel a support role within the Create Growth programme continues to inspire, delivering the tools for growth and hard won industry insight to a cohort of high potential businesses. A panel session with Sol from Factory Studios and Keri from Amschela was a particular highlight.
2024
2024 will bring some similarities, and some key differences.
A second phase of research will commence over the first half of 2024 to establish a clear framework for future intervention and investment in the Western Creative Corridor / Supercluster concept (funded by WECA, Welsh Gov, CCR and Western Gateway).
SxSW will loom large from both a DBT and MyWorld perspective as the key global creative technology event. And a new piece of work for the CoStar National Hub will be part of the beginning of a major intervention in the future of creative R&D across the UK.
From a business perspective I will relaunch the Parameter Consulting brand in order to establish a vehicle for larger consultancy commissions, working to build delivery teams with colleagues and associates matched to individual project and client needs.
The image at the top is proof that, whilst face-to-face is vital, post-Covid you can now just about work anywhere – a week by a Loch in early autumn mixed with Zoom’s across the world. And at the bottom one of my favourite places, the Alles See Pool and Sauna in Helsinki harbour (it was -7 but the water in one of the pools was warm..).
